Gas Stations of St. Mary's County, Maryland
In St. Mary's County, in Southern Maryland, gas stations mark cultural roots for many locals. Whether it is picking up food, meeting to talk, get bait and tackle, or pick up beer for later on in the evening, these neon lit havens are the one constant scattered throughout the day into the night. While open 24/7, these gas stations come to life in the darkest hours of the night into the earliest hours into the morning. Graveyard shift workers from the nearby military base make pit stops, while insomniacs make conversations with the clerk behind the counter, while teenagers smoke cigarettes against their dirt bikes outside by the gas pumps. It is a desolate subculture, few never get to see, except for those awake. Then these stations turn into beams of light like moths attracted to lightbulbs.
